What are Open Educational Resources?

According to UNESCO, they are "Open educational resources (OER) are materials used to support education that may be freely accessed, reused, modified, and shared.

The Hewlett Foundation describes Open Educational Resources as."... freely and publicly available learning resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. They include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge.

Benefits to Students using OER:

  • Elimination of cost barriers to purchasing textbooks, making courses affordable & eliminating barriers to learning
  • Flexibility in accessing high quality free and open textbooks in a variety of formats, such as PDF, online, EPUB, etc.
  • Materials can be accessed 24/7

Benefits to Faculty using OER:

  • Availability of high quality free and open textbooks in a variety of formats
  • Provide more access to courses that students will be able to take, based on the net zero cost of OER materials
  • The ability to create, adapt, modify and customize materials using a Creative Commons License
